Tests for Rectal Cancer

Imaging tests helps us to accurately stage the tumour so appropriate treatment can be recommended

MRI of Rectum is the investigation of choice for assessing rectal cancer.

MRI of rectum provides excellent images which help in the accurate assessment of local disease. It helps us to know the stage of tumour ie if there is any spread. This will help us to decide and plan if the patients need any extra treatment ( chemotherapy, radiotherapy or both) before surgery.
CT scan of abdomen/chest is done to check if the cancer has spread far to lungs, liver and other areas.
PET CT scan is primarily done to check for recurrent disease ie if the cancer has come back after initial treatment with surgery.
